History of the Greensboro Club (NANBPWC, Inc.)

 The Greensboro Club of The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Incorporated was organized on May 16, 1979 at the Woodlea Lake Club House in Greensboro, North Carolina. The group was organized by Dr. Sandra Alexander, a former member of the Pittsburgh Club and Dr. Mary Moore Tuggle Whitehurst, a former member of the Pontiac Club.


A total of seventeen women had joined when The National Association awarded the Club its charter on August 2, 1979. The original charter members of The Greensboro Club were Sandra Alexander, Linda Bowling Wilson, Brenda Bruner, Doris Hipps Dansby, Carolyn Davis, Constantine Hicks Evans, Helen LaBlanc Disher, Mary Moore Tuggle Whitehurst, Sarah Nelson, Geraldine Henderson Ray, Joyce Richardson, Gladys Ashe Robinson, Janice Robinson Brewington, Carol Reed, Paulette Spruill, Julie Stanback and Gertrude Upperman.


The first president of The Greensboro Club was Dr. Sandra Alexander, who also served as District Vice Governor. The current president is Cheryl McKay. Past presidents are Connie O. Smith, Dr. Mary Moore Tuggle Whitehurst, Avet Anderson, Edith Millsaps, Dr. Rosa Purcell, Kathleen Smith, Dr. Geraldine Ray, Bettie Godfrey, Angela Lennon, Marvette Artis, Marie E. Castillo, Beverly Wallace, Dr. Geraldine Ray, Janice Holt, Dr. Yardley Hunter, Amryl Ward and Lisa DeBerry.


The Greensboro Club has received numerous awards on the district and national levels of the Association for excellence in programming. Our programs are based on a national mandate with the acronym LETS (Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Technology and Service). In this our 46th year we continue to render service and provide information in these and other areas to Greensboro residents. The Greensboro Club’s growth and development has been evident through each president’s administration. We are also delighted to have members who have proudly served on our National Board of Director’s to include: Marie E. Castillo (22nd National President, 2011-2015), Beverly Wallace (National Recording Secretary, 2019-2023), Cheryl McKay (Director of Education, 2015-2019) and currently, Lisa DeBerry (National Financial Secretary, 2025-present).


The members of The Greensboro Club of The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Incorporated have been serving in the community for forty-six years with care and compassion. The Club is comprised of a group of African American women dedicated and committed to the betterment of the community and society at large.
